Typically, adsorption dryers use activated alumina as the adsorbent; however, activated alumina has certain drawbacks, necessitating the use of molecular sieves instead. Molecular sieves are superior adsorbents, offering a much larger surface area than alumina and possessing highly uniform pore sizes, which confer excellent adsorption selectivity. Even at very low water vapor partial pressures, they maintain substantial adsorption capacity—whereas activated alumina and silica gel exhibit significant adsorption only under high‑moisture conditions. Consequently, molecular sieves are ideally suited for the deep dehydration and drying of compressed air.
