UOP molecular sieve adsorbents have supported post-disaster efforts in Japan, removing radioactive contaminants from more than 5 million gallons of contaminated water.
TISPLAIN, Illinois, USA, December 8, 2011 — Honeywell (NYSE: HON) UOP announced today that Japan’s Toshiba Corporation and Shaw Global Services have successfully removed radioactive contaminants from contaminated water at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan, using UOP adsorbent ion-exchange products.
UOPIONSIV™ ion-exchange technology has been applied to the “Simplified Active Water Retrieval and Recovery System” (SARRY) to remove and reduce radioactive substances from nuclear-contaminated wastewater. Wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant was contaminated during the earthquake and tsunami earlier this year.
“We are deeply concerned for those affected by this disaster, and we also take pride in the fact that Honeywell UOP’s high‑quality ion‑exchange products have been successfully deployed to treat contaminated water, helping to prevent further harm at the Fukushima nuclear power plant and in the surrounding areas,” said Mike Millard, Vice President and General Manager of Catalysts, Adsorbents, and Specialty Chemicals at Honeywell UOP.
The SARRY system, jointly developed by Toshiba Corporation, Shaw Global Services, and AVAN Technology Co., Ltd., has been deployed in post-disaster cleanup operations for more than three months. The three companies will continue to collaborate to employ this technology, reducing the concentration of radioactive cesium to undetectable levels.
UOPIONSIV ion-exchange adsorbents are crystalline materials capable of selectively removing radioactive ions from liquids. These materials have been used commercially for over 30 years to remove radioactive ions from radioactive waste steam, alkali tank waste, and spent fuel storage pools in commercial nuclear power plants.
Honeywell UOP holds a leading position in the adsorbents market. More than 60 years ago, UOP pioneered the development of synthetic zeolites for producing molecular sieve adsorbents. Today, in addition to zeolite molecular sieves and alumina products, Honeywell UOP offers a comprehensive portfolio of adsorbents designed to remove contaminants such as mercury and sulfur compounds.
